Explain connection to The United Methodists Church | Bee Creek is a United Methodist Church.
How many volunteers are involved? | 0
How many staff members? | 1
Have you explored opportunities to collaborate with other United Methodist Churches to work toward your mission?* |
| ||||
If yes, please describe. | Due to geographic distance, we have not collaborated with any other United Methodist Churches.
Congregational support | At this time the congregation supports the program by donating used equipment. Also, some congregants will cover classes if I or the other instructor is sick or needs time off.
How does your mission fulfill the purpose of the grant you are requesting? | "Bee Creek UMC is a community of imperfect people who are transformed by the perfect love of God and change the world together". Bee Creek UMC mission statement. “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Our bodies are the instruments we use to worship, love and serve others. This grant will allow us to continue to provide women within our church and the surrounding community, a free, safe, comfortable, place to improve their overall health through diet instruction and exercise. Due to the growth of our Bee Fit program, we are in desperate need of new equipment to maintain the ministry and to accommodate its continued growth. Because of increasing attendance and social distancing concerns, we are close to having to turn women away by limiting class sizes. With additional funds, we could offer additional classes and purchase equipment to provide a cardio area for women who cannot participate in weight or resistance training.
How many individuals will be served by the funds requested? | 65
Demographics | The Bee Fit Club serves women, with members ranging in age from their 30’s to their 80’s. On school holidays teenaged girls join their mothers and grandmothers and get a rigorous workout. We see women joining because they are on a tight budget and cannot afford to pay for a monthly gym membership. Second, some join because they live close by, or they are elderly and don’t feel comfortable driving far. Thirdly, some women join because they are mentally fragile and need a safe, non-judgmental place to exercise with other women. They appreciate the class focus on health and faith. Spicewood is a diverse area, ranging from upper middle class to lower class. Many of the women coming to Bee Fit have been referred by volunteers from the church or from groups like Helping Hands Crisis Ministries and Partners in Hope.

Grant history and reporting | Yes, Bee Creek received a Juanita Peterson grant in 2019. We identified a need to offer women a safe, comfortable, free place to exercise. The grant funds allowed Bee Creek to start up the Bee Fit women's club by purchasing the fitness equipment. Funds also helped pay for Christian Yoga/Pilates classes, and bought supplies for a healthy cooking class. When the Bee Fit program piloted in 2019, we consistently had eight women attending. I am proud to say, we now have twenty-five women attending each class and every week we continue to grow. The women who participate are being encouraged and helped physically, mentally, and spiritually.
